Why Burgas

“This train to Burgas is so slow.
I dream of the rainy beach.
There is my life – my strange and unique verbal landscape….”

– Hristo Fotev, poet

Burgas, a city on the Black Sea coast, is nestled among three lakes and salt pans. Its entire history is inextricably linked to the sea. The city’s very location – surrounded on three sides by water – is the fundamental reason for its emergence and development.

A port city that historically served as a safe haven for multitudes of immigrants of diverse origins and ethnicities, whose mission remains to live together in peace and harmony. Burgas is a city for everyone and everything. A harbor that embraces and extends opportunities. A city that is the largest settlement in the EU’s southeastern border region.

And even favored by birds — the Via Pontica, a key bird migration route from Europe to Africa — passes over Burgas.

Burgas’ unique geographical position makes it a natural bridge between East and West — an exceptionally fertile ground for cultural exchange and cooperation with other European and international cultural operators. The city’s combination of historical monuments, traditions and contemporary cultural expressions is ripe for presentation on a European and international scale.

“Best city to live in Bulgaria“, „The fastest growing city” – accolades that reflect the path of modern Burgas. Yet the city also identifies and embraces its challenges, such as creating the conditions for retaining and attracting more young people and the disproportionate concentration of cultural and community activities in the summer months.

The European Capital of Culture initiative will serve to stimulate urban development, infrastructure improvements and the social integration of diverse communities in the city. As a capital of culture, Burgas will attract more year-round tourists and international attention, thereby bolstering the local economy and cultural sector. Involving residents in cultural events and programs will strengthen their sense of belonging, ensuring a more sustainable cultural life.

In applying for the title of European Capital of Culture, Burgas aspires to establish culture as a driver of its social and economic development. The city’s rich cultural heritage, innovative urban environment and openness to diversity makes it a natural stage for European cultural dialogue. Burgas views this initiative as an opportunity to expand its international cultural presence, while engaging its community more broadly. Burgas will endeavor to use contemporary and sustainable cultural policies to inspire and connect people beyond borders.
