EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

The European Capital of Culture program was created to support the cultural wealth and diversity of Europe. It serves as a reminder of our shared European history and values, while also building upon them.
The initiative was first proposed in June 1985 by Ms. Melina Mercouri, the then Minister of Culture of Greece, and her French counterpart, Mr. Jack Lang. The initiative was subsequentlysupported by the Council of the European Union.
It has become one of the European Union’s most successful programs over the past three decades, owing to the positive impact it has had on the selected cities.
To date, the title of European Capital of Culture has been awarded to 70 cities across more than 30 countries.
The preparation involved for becoming a European Capital of Culture represents an opportunity for the cultural, social and economic development of the chosen city.
It is a process that contributes to urban development and the creative industries, while also promoting the city’s image internationally. The European Capital of Culture initiative brings about numerous cultural events throughout the year in the city holding the title. These events often occur in specially created or renovated urban spaces.
New jobs are created, and the city often becomes one of the most attractive tourist destinations.
The title gives the city the opportunity to modernize its image and attract new investments, revitalizing not only its own area but also the entire region.

WHY
BURGAS

This train to Burgas is so slow. I dream of the rainy beach. There is my life – my strange and unique verbal landscape….”

BURGAS 2032 FOUNDATION

The goal of the Burgas 2032 Foundation is to apply operational, programmatic and communication strategies that ensure the Burgas 2032 – European Capital of Culture project is implemented in an independent, efficient and transparent manner.
The foundation prepares the Municipality of Burgas for participation in the European Capital of Culture 2032 initiative, which includes preparing and submitting the necessary application forms. This involves an action plan, consisting of various processes and events, as well as an extensive information campaign aimed at developing Burgas as a place for creating and presenting cultural content, and promoting it on an international level.
The action plan also ensures that the results of the European Capital of Culture 2032 project are sustainable. It does this by supporting the continued organization of established events, festivals, forums and projects, and by encouraging preparation, application and participation in national, European and other donor programs.
