Burgas Became the Literary Capital of the Black Sea Region
“Burgas has become the literary capital of Bulgaria!” exclaimed Svetlozar Zhelev, Creative Director of the Black Sea International Literary Festival, at the opening of the event’s second edition.
From June 5 to 8, the city welcomed more than 60 writers, translators, publishers, and literary figures from Bulgaria, Turkey, Ukraine, Georgia, and Romania — including laureates and nominees of the European Union Prize for Literature. Literature was heard in five Black Sea languages during the public readings organized as part of the festival.
Burgas literature lovers also enjoyed inspirational meetings with five of the most beloved Bulgarian authors: Georgi Gospodinov, Zachary Karabashliev, Kapka Kassabova, Viktoria Beshlijska, and Katya Antonova.
The Black Sea International Literary Festival was held under the banner of Burgas’ candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2032.
